The chocolate ricciarello is a gluttonous version of the classic recipe, with cocoa added to the sweet and bitter almond paste along with a sprinkle of chocolate drops. These soft almond sweets hide an oriental charm: according to a legend, the Crusaders introduced them to Tuscany from the Middle East. Siena’s master confectioners made these small cakes even more refined topping them with powdered sugar.
