However simple they look, Cantucci have become the most famous cookies among Tuscan sweets. Their origins date back at least to the 15th century as they were prepared by some cooks in honour of the Marchioness Isabella d'Este who was visiting Florence. These fortunate cookies, baked in the oven with simple ingredients such as flour, eggs and whole almonds, became the typical sweets of festive occasions in Tuscany. The ideal pairing for the Cantucci is Vin Santo, Tuscan liqueur wine, into which they are soaked; they are also served with other dessert wine, liqueurs or with a cup of tea or a good Nannini espresso.
